ITV have got the rights to show Saturday night football! Whatever next - long hair on men?

Yes, we're off to Granadaland once more, but Gerald Sinstadt's insisting on staying in his commentary box, so the job of linking all the footy footage has fallen to Roger Elton Welsby. He seems like a nice enough young man, but just to be on the safe side, he's got backup in the form of England international goalkeeper, Ray Clemence. Maybe he can explain why Liverpool have just lost their three-year unbeaten run at home...

Elsewhere, we drop in on the Anglia region where (and this will make you larf) Ipswich Town think they're in with a chance of winning the League Championship, then we head off to that there London to catch a West Ham team that are trying to get back to Division One. Will Preston North End stand in their way?

If all that wasn't enough, there's the usual look at what was happening in the news and, whisper it quietly, they might be changing the One Pound Note to a coin. How will they get a picture of Brian May on THAT?

There's also lots of talk on the subject of novelty chart records, old TV adverts for Lego, the redevelopment of the London Docklands area (we kid you not) and much, MUCH more besides. Oh, and a bit of swearing, but we've censored most of it out, thankfully.

If you want to watch the accompanying episode of Match Night that features in this episode, you can find it here. Yes, we're looking back at 20th March 1993, Des Lynam and Match of the Day...

In this podcast, we remind ourselves of a time when Man United were only just remembering how to be the best team in England again. There's Cantona and Giggs, but both are having trouble finding the net at this point, and as for Bryan Robson... well, he's been injured recently, but you knew that already, probably.

United are up against their rivals Man City, while elsewhere, Liverpool face their arch-enemies Everton. Why is John Barnes warming up with a four-year-old? Why is Graeme Souness Britain's angriest man? And why does Clive Tyldesley think attendances will never go beyond 44,000 ever again?

All these questions are answered, plus we remember the ridiculous excitement generated by Nicam Stereo TV's, ponder for a moment on Bruce Forsyth's short career as a cartoon narrator and find out why Rich spent his days at university writing about BDSM. It's the podcast that truly has everything you could ever want!

Watch along with our featured episode of Match of the Day here, and don't forget to drop us a line if you want to tell us about anything featured in this podcast. Well no, and you can blame Gerald Sinstadt for that because on this episode we're in Granadaland where The Kick Off Match (crap title) is showing us all the best football action from 'Oop North.'

There's much to entertain us from Sinstadt talking into a dubious microphone in a shipping container to referee Jack Taylor personally taking it upon himself to drag a long-haired loon off the pitch. As if that wasn't enough, there's the weirdest theme tune accompanying the most sinister title sequence, kids selling doughnuts AND another instalment of 'Where's Brucie?'

Just don't ask how good the football is because Leicester and ManYoo are playing like schoolkids and Stoke and Sunderland don't even own a banjo, let alone hit a cow's backside with it.

Never mind, it's all classic stuff and you'll do well to watch it too before listening to us giving our own distinctive take on things. IF YOU DON'T, THE WHOLE THING WON'T MAKE SENSE. Your choice...

(Please note: This episode was recorded just a few days before Gerald Sinstadt passed away. We'd like to dedicate this podcast to his memory.)

Download:

The Football Attic: Episode 6 (.MP3 74.9 MB)

Chris Ohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14451130702323813966noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6702800010273076139.post-67985134638747795752021-10-06T20:21:00.002+01:002021-11-19T06:36:51.428+00:00Football Attic: Rewind - Episode 5

Greetings nostalgia lovers... it's Attic Rewind time again!

On this occasion, we're heading back to the warm, cosy beigeness of the BBC's Match of the Day studio such as it was on February 2nd 1985. Once again, Jimmy Hill has the highlights of two matches to bring us, but, with the aid of Tony Gubba, there's also time for a brief report from Millwall where George Graham is learning the managerial ropes. Hooligans? What hooligans?

On the pitch, we get to see Luton Town facing up to their fellow lavish spenders Tottenham Hotspur at a ground that has possibly the most advertising boards in the country. They've even got some on the upper tier of the main stand!

After trying to be not too distracted by all the pro-Scandi names on show at Kenilworth Road, it's off to Hillsborough again where there's 48,000 watching Sheffield Wednesday play Liverpool - most of them wearing bobble hats, parkas, scarves or possibly a combination of all three. The game's not all that flash, but Jimmy Hill reckons it's a wind-related problem. Well we've all been there...

Elsewhere, Breaking News: Bryan Robson's injured! But it's not all predictable... We get to see all the goals from Dumbarton (WTF?), stopping along the way to find out what Bruce Forsyth was up to in February 1985, and discover the worst small business name in the UK at time of recording. Oh, and we give a doff of the hat to the late, great Sir Clive Sinclair.

It's all here in episode 5 of The Football Attic: Rewind, including this ever-important link to the accompanying Match of the Day episode. Why? Well apart from 'why not?', we wanted to watch an old episode of ITV's The Big Match and tell you what we saw.

Among the many delights on offer this time around:

Brian Moore once again turns his back on the giants of English football to focus instead on Second Division Chelsea,

Rich paints the slightly inappropriate picture of him and his brother in their underpants wearing cowboy hats (well he was young at the time),

We discuss the improbable coming together of Rod Hull, Emu and Snoop Dog on a low-rent Channel 4 TV show,

and we get our first sighting of a dog on the pitch which, we presume, must have been happening virtually every week during the 1970's.

As well as all that, we defiantly fail to laugh at several referees experiencing misfortune and discomfort, contemplate the miraculous popularity of grapefruits four decades ago, and commit unflinchingly to give Bruce Forsyth his own spot in all future episodes. What more could you possibly ask for?

Well, there's always a link to this episode of The Big Match, of course. That would be handy. Apart from that, not a lot, we hope...

Download:

The Football Attic: Episode 4 (.MP3 84.6 MB)

Follow us on Patreon

By donating just £3 per month, you can download every episode of The Football Attic: Rewind two weeks before anyone that chooses not to. First of all, we're honoured by the presence of Rich Nelson as our guest, fresh from single-handedly providing the BBC with all its Finnish football-related content during Euro 2020.

Having put us straight on the subject of Scandinavian advertising boards of the late-1980's, we plunge into an episode of ITV's The Big Match from 7th December 1975. As ever, the observations are acute and the tangents wild.

For instance, did John Wayne really voice a minor part in Star Wars? Was sports bra technology really so appalling 46 years ago? And why did some overhead projectors in the 1970's use orange-tinted plastic sheets?

There's also much delight at the memory of ITV regions we'd see on holiday as kids, a moment to ponder who had more fun with Raquel Welch - Jimmy Hill or Peter Osgood? - and a conscious effort on our parts not to mention the name of a popular brand of liquorice in Denmark. All that, plus listener feedback and Brian Moore telling a viewer how to say 'Steve Coppell' properly.

Confused? Don't be. Watch this episode of The Big Match, settle back and listen to our observations using the download link below. I said after Volume 2 that I'd never write another book about football shirts...I was wrong.

I did, however, figure that if I was going to risk sanity and divorce once more, I'd best make it worth it...and so the idea behind Volume 3 of the Attic Kit collection was born.

Rather than just showcase the latest additions to my collection, I thought I'd come up with a theme...and also a proper title. Given my love of obscure (some would say hideous) and limited edition shirts, it made sense to showcase as many as possible...

And so 'From Masterpiece to Madness' - The Football Attic Kit Collection Volume 3 is now on the horizon...but I'm doing things a little differently.

For one, it's going to be in portrait - this will allow each shirt to have a whole page to itself.
I'm getting them properly printed too, which means more pages (currently looking at between 130-150) and it should also reduce the cost slightly...so more for less! Bargain!

As I'm having to order all the books upfront, I thought it'd make sense to get a feel for how many I should get printed...so, if you're interested, please fill out the form below.

NB This is just to register your interest and does not commit you to buying.

There's a few sneak peeks at some of the pages below the form...enjoy and thanks for your support :)
Halcyon days weren't they? Just like everything from years gone by... waaaaaay better than this modern BS!

Or is it?

See, we're not convinced everything was better in the past... rickets, for example...

To that end, we decided to finish the debate once and for all* and so spent 2 1/2 hours discussing a wide range of subjects and declaring which was better - old or new.
Happy Easter, everyone!

When you've got a brief opening in your schedule in between scoffing huge lumps of chocolate egg, why not listen in to Episode 18 of the Football Attic Kit Pod?

We've got a special Easter-themed show for you this time which brilliantly gathers together all the football kit information you need while hardly ever mentioning the Christian holiday and festival that means so much to so many. Thank us later, if you like.

There's also Kit News and another Kit Off vote too (details below)... what more could you possibly ask for (apart from yet another chocolate egg)?

To hear Episode 18, you can subscribe to us on iTunes or you can download the podcast here. Thanks for listening!
For our latest Kit Off vote, we've chosen three Hibernian home shirts, for reasons that are explained in the podcast. As ever, we'd just like you to vote for your favourite using the buttons below, and we'll announce the results of our poll on the next podcast. Thanks in advance for taking part!
It's Part 2 of the reeeeeeeally long chat all about Wales shirts aided and abetted by our Pot Noodle correspondent, the one and only Simon 'Shakey' Shakeshaft!

In Part 1, we (finally) managed to get through Kit News and also covered our favourite Wales home shirts from 1980 - Present Day.

Now it's time for us all to cover the lovely away shirts, so sit back, get comfortable, maybe grab a pillow and a duvet, and enjoy the beautiful yokel-like tones of Mr Shakey.

The pod is available to download here.

Oh, and before you download the podcast, an apology for the poor sound quality on Chris' audio track. We're not sure what caused him to sound so muffled and distant, but we've done all we can to make him sound as clear as possible, albeit under limiting circumstances. Sorry for any inconvenience where that's concerned...
It's time for yet another special guest on The Football Attic Kit Podcast (you lucky people) - it's the one and only Simon 'Shakey' Shakeshaft!

As anyone will tell you (especially Shakey himself), Shakey knows all there is to know about the shirts and kits worn by the Wales national team down the years, so that's the subject we're taking for this podcast.

And good news for you (we hope) - it's another two-parter!

The first part is available to download here and contains an extended Kit News section and the opening part of our debate on the greatest Wales shirts since 1980. The second part of the podcast will be available to download on this website soon and will contain the remaining part of our Wales shirt discussion, plus the Kit Off vote which you can take part in below.

This week we deviate slightly from the usual format, taking a break from the Kit Collection feature to indulge ourselves in some star gazing...

For Episode 15 of the Football Attic Kit Podcast, we're talking to TV's John Devlin about... well, about TV's John Devlin!

We take a wander down Devlin lane and get to find out all about his career, the stars he's fraternized with and eventually we get to the meat of it all when we get stuck into his brilliant True Colours books.

Listen as Chris repeatedly tries to ruin the chance of a TC3 ever coming to fruition, while Rich mocks the main man's love of Scotland!

There's no kit off vote just yet... that'll be in Part 2...
This week we turn the clock back nearly 40 years to the 1978 World Cup, a competition that featured 16 teams, Tango balls and a hint of suspicion, if you happened to be Peruvian...

For Episode 14 of the Football Attic Kit Podcast, we're choosing our favourite three home and away kits from the tournament - a task that might seem straight-forward on paper... until you realise that most of the kits looked incredibly similar...

We look at the good, the bad and (in the case of one game involving France) the downright bizarre, with plenty of opportunities to read out your comments along the way.

There's
also a Mexican flavoured Kit Off vote for you (details below) and some Kit
News from south of the border too... Ay, caramba!

There's always a buzz about The Football Attic Kit Podcast when we invite a special guest to join us, and we're very pleased to say that's exactly what you can expect for Episode 13!

This time around, we're joined by Denis Hurley to talk about our favourite Republic of Ireland kits and as ever, we're picking our top three in the home and away categories. Which ones will we choose, and did we match all three of our away selections for the second podcast running?! Tune in to find out!

There's also an Ireland-themed Kit Off vote for you (details below) and some Kit News about Tottenham and Chelsea's switch to Nike next season.

Oh, and one thing to let you know about - unfortunately we had a number of technical difficulties as a result of using YouTube Live, and the result was some patchy audio quality at times during the podcast. We've tried to iron out as many of those issues as possible during the editing phase, but we'd like to apologise for any inconvenience caused as a result of any remaining issues.

Classic Football Shirts (free advertising here guys...cough cough ;-P ) are currently getting people to showcase their collections using the hashtag #CFSCollectorsClub so I found a decent collage app and finally stitched (most) of them together...not literally...

Having posted this on Facebook, the tiny nature of the kits on display, coupled with FB's image compression, meant that most were impossible to make out.

So, here's the whole lot (give or take a few I don't have photos of)...

Enjoy...and revel in my obsession...click on it to see it full size...
Happy New Year, kit lovers everywhere!

Welcome to another 12-month period of adulation, criticism and analysis of the best kits the world has to offer, courtesy of your hosts, Chris Oakley and Rich Johnson.

To start the year off as we mean to go on, we bring you a new episode which this time features a Kit Collection discussion where we pick our favourite three home and away kits from the National League 2016-17. Yes, it's non-league fun all the way, not least because our Kit Off poll this week also takes its cue from tier 5 of football in England and Wales. See below for details...

As well as all that, we've also got some kit news that takes us almost to all four corners of the globe, plus we find out what football shirts you were hoping to get from Santa. And if you're still dissatisfied after all that, you really should try listening to somebody else's football kit podcast...
"It's Christmastime, there's no need to be afraid." So sang Paul Young, but then again Paul Young didn't have to listen to two wizened men in their 40's talking about football kits for nearly two hours.

Yes, it's the Football Attic's 'Very Nearly A Christmas Special' episode, and have we got a festive treat for you! (Well not necessarily... 'treat' is a very nebulous word...)

This time around, we're looking at the kits worn by those teams that found themselves at the top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day from 1992 through to 2016. And it's not all Man United and Chelsea, you know... There are one or two surprise inclusions that you may have forgotten about with the passing of time. Tune in and be reminded of the good, the bad and the ugly of modern British kit design...

There's also another Kit Off vote (details below) plus the latest Kit News. Have a Merry Christmas? Of course you will, if you download Episode 11 of the Football Attic Kit Pod!
